Midfield Hammer Blow: Mikel Merino Sidelined After Surgery
Arsenal’s quest for silverware has been dealt a significant setback with the news that Spanish midfielder Mikel Merino could miss the rest of the campaign. The 29-year-old underwent a procedure this week to repair a stress fracture in his right foot, an injury sustained during the Gunners' 3-2 defeat to Manchester United in late January.
A "Very Rare" Injury
The news comes as a bitter pill for manager Mikel Arteta, who had come to rely on Merino’s tactical intelligence and physical presence. While initial assessments suggested a minor issue, further specialist reviews revealed a more complex bone injury that necessitated surgical intervention.
"Mikel offers something unique in the team but he's going to be out for four months unfortunately with a very rare injury," Arteta noted earlier this week. "We need to support him and make sure he stays connected with the group."
Race Against Time
Despite the "successful" nature of the surgery, the recovery timeline is tight. Merino is expected to be sidelined for approximately three to four months. While the club holds a slim hope that he could return to training by May, the reality is that he may have played his final minutes of the 2025/26 season.
The timing is particularly cruel for the Spaniard, with the 2026 World Cup looming in June. Merino’s priority will now shift to an intensive rehabilitation program in hopes of regaining fitness in time to represent Spain on the global stage.

Testing Arsenal’s Depth
With the Premier League title race reaching a fever pitch and crucial Champions League knockout ties on the horizon, Arsenal must now lean on their squad depth.
- Internal Solutions: The recent return of Kai Havertz to full fitness provides some relief, while the emergence of youngster Max Dowman and the versatility of Declan Rice will be vital.
- The Impact: Merino’s absence robs Arsenal of a "control" player who has already netted six goals this season and provided much-needed aerial dominance in both boxes.
Taking to Instagram from his hospital bed, Merino remained defiant: "Surgery done! Already closer to being back... life throws these challenges when it is less convenient, but it’s just another opportunity to be strong."
