Morocco Ready: WAFCON 2026 Dates and Record 16-Team Field Confirmed
The spotlight of African women’s football returns to the Maghreb as Morocco prepares to host the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON). In a decisive move that provides much-needed clarity for the continent’s elite, CAF President Patrice Motsepe confirmed that the tournament will run from March 17 to April 3, 2026, officially quashing rumors of a potential venue change.

A Historic Expansion
For the first time in the competition’s history, the field has been expanded from 12 to 16 teams. This 33% increase in participation is part of CAF’s strategic vision to elevate the standard of the women's game and provide more exposure to emerging nations.
Because the expansion was finalized after the initial qualifying rounds, CAF utilized the FIFA World Rankings to select four additional "lucky losers" to complete the roster. This decision breathed new life into the campaigns of Cameroon, CĂ´te d'Ivoire, Mali, and Egypt, all of whom will now join the party in Morocco.
The Road to Brazil 2027
The stakes in Rabat, Casablanca, and Fes go far beyond continental glory. The 2026 WAFCON serves as the official African qualifying tournament for the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup in Brazil.
- Automatic Spots: All four semi-finalists will secure an automatic ticket to the World Cup.
- The Second Chance: Losing quarter-finalists will enter a playoff tournament to decide which two African nations will advance to the inter-confederation playoffs.
Group Stage Highlights
Following the official draw held at the Mohamed VI Complex, several "Groups of Death" have emerged. Notably, Nigeria—the defending champions—find themselves in a heavyweight clash in Group C alongside a surging Zambia side and tournament debutants Malawi.
"Morocco came to our aid... we cannot change the dates because the tournament is part of the qualifiers for the FIFA Women's World Cup," Motsepe noted, emphasizing the tournament's non-negotiable timeline.
With three-time hosts Morocco enjoying a home-field advantage and Nigeria seeking to defend their crown, WAFCON 2026 is set to be the most competitive and widely-watched edition yet.
