Midfield Reinforcement: Everton’s Tyler Onyango Officially Commits to Harambee Stars
The “UK Mission” led by Harambee Stars head coach Benni McCarthy and FKF Vice President McDonald Mariga has yielded its most significant result yet. Following face-to-face talks in London this week, 23-year-old Everton starlet Tyler Onyango has confirmed he will represent Kenya, choosing the nation of his father over England.
The McCarthy Factor
The breakthrough comes just days after McCarthy and Mariga were spotted meeting the midfielder, who is currently excelling on loan at Stockport County. While Onyango has been a long-term target for the federation, it was the personal intervention of McCarthy—a man with deep ties to the English game—that finally tipped the scales.
Onyango, a physical and technically gifted central midfielder standing at 6'5", has previously represented England at the U17 level. However, the lure of leading Kenya in a historic home AFCON in 2027 proved to be the decisive factor in his “change of heart.”
"Tyler is a top-level professional nurtured in one of the best academies in the world," Mariga noted. “His commitment is a major boost to our tactical plans for 2027 and beyond.”
A Midfield Powerhouse
Onyango’s arrival adds a new dimension to the Kenyan engine room. Known for his box-to-box energy and ability to play as a deep-lying playmaker or even a makeshift center-back, he provides the “tactical sophistication” McCarthy has been seeking.
Tyler Onyango Profile:
Current Club: Everton (on loan at Stockport County)
Height: 1.96m (6'5”)
Style: High-energy, versatile midfielder with Premier League experience.
Eligibilty: Committed to Kenya via his father (March 2026).
Strengthening the Ranks
Onyango joins a growing list of “Stars Abroad” making their way back to the national fold. With Collins Sichenje shining at Charlton and Job Ochieng in scoring form at Real Sociedad, the Harambee Stars are beginning to resemble a truly global outfit.
The federation is now racing to finalize Onyango’s paperwork in time for the FIFA Series in Kigali later this month. If cleared, the Everton man could make his debut as early as March 23 against Estonia, marking the start of a new chapter for Kenyan football.
